Nearly 28,000 irregular migrants traveled from Libya to Italy between Jan. and mid-Apr. this year, signaling a 30 percent year-on-year increase in arrivals to Europe via this sea-route, according to data released Wednesday by the European Union's border agency, Frontex.
There was a substantial increase in the flow of irregular migrants along the Central Mediterranean route, in contrast with the drop experienced along the Eastern Mediterranean route to Greece, Frontex director, Fabrice Leggeri, said in an interview with German daily "Passauer Neue Presse."
