Erdogan threatens to open borders to migrants after EU Parliament vote

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday threatened to throw open Turkey's borders to illegal migrants after the European Parliament voted to back a freeze in membership talks with Ankara.


"Listen to me. If you go any further, then the frontiers will be opened, bear that in mind," Erdogan told the European Union (EU) in a speech in Istanbul.

On March 18, Ankara and Brussels forged a deal for Turkey to halt the flow of migrants to Europe -- an accord that has largely been successful in reducing numbers crossing the Aegean Sea.

But the European Parliament on Thursday voted in favor of halting membership talks with Turkey over its post-coup crackdown.

• Le président turc Recep Tayyip Erdogan a menacé vendredi d'ouvrir les frontières pour laisser passer les migrants voulant se rendre en Europe, au lendemain d'un vote du Parlement européen demandant le gel des négociations d'adhésion de la Turquie à l'UE.

"Lorsque 50.000 migrants se sont amassés au poste-frontière de Kapikule (à la frontière turco-bulgare), vous avez crié à l'aide. Vous avez commencé à vous demander: +Que ferons-nous si la Turquie ouvre ses frontières ?+", a déclaré M. Erdogan.

"Ecoutez-moi bien. Si vous allez plus loin, ces frontières s'ouvriront, mettez-vous ça dans la tête", a déclaré M. Erdogan lors d'un discours à Istanbul.

Dans une résolution non contraignante adoptée à une très large majorité à Strasbourg, les eurodéputés ont appelé jeudi à "un gel temporaire" du processus d'adhésion entamé en 2005 en raison de la répression "disproportionnée" en cours depuis le coup d'Etat avorté de juillet.
