Iran deplores election of Saudi Arabia to UN rights council

Iran's Foreign Ministry said Sunday that the recent election of Saudi Arabia to the UN Human Rights Council is inappropriate, Tehran Times daily reported.

"Election of certain countries such as Saudi Arabia is the best proof to believe that international tools of human rights are merely at the service of political interests," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi on Sunday.

Araqchi made the comments on the sidelines of a ceremony held in Tehran to mark the 71st anniversary of implementation of the UN Charter.

"Election of a regime that is known to all as a child-killer and deprives women of their least rights indicates that decisions made at the Human Rights Council, and all other international mechanisms related to human rights, are politically motivated," he was quoted as saying.

On Oct. 28, Saudi Arabia, and 13 other countries were elected as new members of the UN rights panel for three-year terms.
