Inclusion of the northern Greece [Macedonia] archaeological site of Philippi in Unesco’s list of World Heritage Sites will be decided at the organization’s annual conference, which will take place next month in Istanbul.

Representatives of 21 countries will vote on the proposal for Philippi over the weekend of July 16-17. The voting members are Angola, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Croatia, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

The ancient city was founded by Phillip II of Macedon in the fourth century BC in what was then the eastern frontier of ancient Macedonia and reached its zenith in the first century AD, when it expanded as a Roman colony.
