The militants of the terrorist organization “Islamic state” destroyed two thousand years of the monument “the Gate of God” near the Iraqi city of Mosul. About it writes The Independent with reference to a source in the British Institute for the study of Iraq.
The gate is a building, guarding the entrance to the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh, which was once the largest city in the world.
Eyewitnesses in Mosul said that Islamic militants used military equipment to destroy the gate.
According to a source, there are unconfirmed reports that terrorists removed part of the walls of Nineveh and sold stone blocks.
The destruction of the gate is not first an act of destruction by extremists of historical objects captured on their territory.
In February 2015 the band released a propaganda video clip, which depicted the destruction of the Museum in Mosul, in particular the destruction of ancient sculpture, including Assyrian winged bull is an ancient deity.
Also looted the library of Mosul. Militants torched more than 100 thousand old books and manuscripts, some of which are acknowledged by UNESCO as historical rarities. In addition, ISIS has destroyed numerous historic mosques, churches and temples in Mosul and the surrounding area.
Outside of Iraq the Islamists have caused serious damage to the historical city of Palmyra, which for several months was under their occupation before the Syrian government forces with the support of the Russian air force knocked them out.
