US Urges Europe to Uphold Humane Treatment of Refugees

US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom David Saperstein said that Washington urges EU governments to uphold their obligations for humane treatment of refugees and ensure that individuals do not face harassment or discrimination on account of their Muslim faith.

The EU governments should treat refugees in a humane way and ensure they are not being discriminated, US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom David Saperstein said on Wednesday.

“As hundreds of thousands of Syrians, Afghans, Iraqis and others have fled into Europe in recent weeks, we urge governments to uphold their obligations for human treatment of refugees and ensure that individuals do not face harassment or discrimination on account of their Muslim faith,” Saperstein said.

The US official made the comment during presentation of the International Religious Freedom Report for 2014.

Europe is currently beset by a major migrant crisis as hundreds of thousands refugees flee their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration announced that almost 600,000 migrants have arrived in the EU by crossing the Mediterranean Sea in 2015.

US advocacy group Human Rights Watch has previously stated that poor organization in reception camps for refugees, particularly in the Greek island of Lesbos, created chaos and unnecessary security problems.

The US State Department publishes the report annually detailing the status of religious freedom in every country in accordance with the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.
