Hamas, Israel approach 'comprehensive agreement' on ceasefire, blockade

Yasin Aktay, senior advisor to Turkish Premier Ahmet Davutoglu, revealed that Islamist Hamas movement and Israel are moving towards a "comprehensive agreement" that includes ending the Gaza blockade and a permanent ceasefire.

In Monday’s interview with the Palestinian news website Al-Resala, Aktay said that the issue was discussed during last week's visit by Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal to Turkey, when he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Davutoglu, and several Turkish officials.

Israel has imposed a naval and land blockade that restricts the movement of people and goods to and from Gaza since the Hamas won parliamentary elections and became its de-facto ruler in 2006.

Three wars between Israel and Hamas have occurred in the past six years. The most recent of them was an Israeli offensive on Gaza in July-August 2014 that left around 2,220 Palestinians dead. On the Israeli side 73 people were killed, most of them soldiers.

The assault on Gaza also displaced more than 100,000 Palestinians, with about 57,000 living in communal shelters. The assault ended with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire.

  1. Israel said Monday it was not engaged in talks with Hamas following a flurry of media reports suggesting the two sides were discussing a long-term ceasefire...

"Israel is officially clarifying that it is not holding any meetings with Hamas, neither directly, nor via other countries or intermediaries," the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.

Arab and Turkish media have in recent weeks carried reports that were picked up by Israeli media, claiming Israel and the Palestinian movement that rules the Gaza Strip were holding talks.

According to the reports, the talks were aimed at reaching an eight-year of 10-year truce, with Israel removing its blockade on the coastal Palestinian territory.
