Protesters have managed to prevent the restart of construction work on a Thirty-Metre Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawai'i today.
Hawaiian media have reported the TMT crews attempted to reach the site of construction only to be met by hundreds of peaceful protesters ‘standing in protection of Mauna Kea as a sacred Native Hawaiian site’.
The crowd of over 500 are said to be under a protocol of “kapu aloha” that dictates all people to be treated with compassion and respect despite opposing views.
A number of arrests were made before police and constructions crews withdrew their advance.
It was to be the first time construction work on the giant telescope was to resume after a two month delay.
